Water Modelling

In this course, we will take a look at various modelling tools that can be employed to aid water management and studies into hydrological and environmental topics. The study will start with an overview of different types of models and some generic concepts related to (numerical) modelling. Then two models will be addressed in more detail: Hydrological models and Flood models with some short examples of studies in which they have been employed. Finally, a case study on flood modelling in Yangon will round up this course.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, students:

• know about the wide range of model types related to water modelling;
• understand important generic concepts related to modelling;
• understand what water models can be used for
• understand the concept of hydrological modelling
• understand the concepts and importance of validation and calibration
• understand the concept behind flood modelling
• know the different ways in which floods can be modelled
• understand the pros and cons and data requirements of different types of flood models

ABOUT INSTRUCTOR

Dr. Hans de Moel, Assistant Professor at the Department of Water and Climate Risk at the Institute for Environmental Studies from Vrije Universiteit.

Dr. Yee Mon Thu, a water resources engineering specialist from Water Bridge Myanmar Co., Ltd, providing engineering consultancy, design and project management services in river and water management sectors. Currently, she is working in a broad range of projects including flood hazard and risk analysis, hydrology and hydraulic modelling, and integrated water resources management.
