Urban Water Management

Urban water management has been an important issue of Sustainable Development Goal on Water (SDG.6) along with integrated water resources management. In order to provide water security, management of freshwater sources, supply of safe drinking water, handling of urban wastewater and storm water are extremely vital in urban infrastructure management.

This course aims to address the nature and challenges of urban water management in the cities of Myanmar and those around the world. The management of urban water infrastructures and planning concepts will be introduced in the first lesson. Secondly, through a case study of Yangon urban area, the cause and effect of urban flood will be explained. The role of land use planning in urban flood management and flood risk mitigation will be discussed in the third lesson. There will be a case study of the Mandalay Thinazar creek area explaining how spatial planning is used in urban areas to promote resilience to flood risk and climate change. Another case study of Mandalay city will be focused on the existing conditions and challenges in its water supply development. The final lesson will address major components of sustainable urban water supply management.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

• Understand the interactions between technical and natural systems relevant to urban water management.
• Know risks of urban flood and natural disaster, and control and prevention against them.
• Understand the importance of land use planning process and the impacts of urban water systems on the receiving environment.
• Understand the framework development of an action plan for urban planning and resilience to flood risk and climate change.
• Gain a basic understanding of the economic, technical and resource challenges associated with water supply development in Mandalay City.
• Become aware of challenges and future potentials of urban water supply in Myanmar cities.
• Think critically about sustainable approaches to urban water supply management from technical, environmental, economic, and socio-cultural standpoints.

ABOUT INSTRUCTOR

The course will be delivered by professors from Myanmar universities who have specialized backgrounds and practice in the fields of Architecture, Urban Design, Urban Planning, and Urban Infrastructure and Urban Water Management.
