Payment for Ecosystem Services for Watersheds Conservation Through Stakeholders Collaboration

In this course, Dr Marije Schaafsma will introduce the concept and application of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES). This will be supplemented with case studies that emphasize the importance of stakeholder collaboration for inclusive watershed preservation and local knowledge for sustainable management. The goal is to enable participants to participate in PES initiatives, enhancing environmental conservation, community well-being, and equitable resource management.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Explain payments for ecosystem services with its approaches and methods
• Improve understanding and knowledge on PES initiatives in Indonesia
• Gain knowledge on how to set up PES as a collective effort for watershed preservation

ABOUT INSTRUCTOR

Dr Marije Schaafsma is an Associate Professor in Environmental Economics at the Institute for Environmental Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her research is focused on the value of nature and their effective management.

Wendy Irwandono is the project coordinator at SNV Indonesia for PAHALA (Pangrango Halimun Salak) project to manage water resources and implement a payment for environmental services (PES) scheme with local farmers in four villages.

Lisa Tanika is a researcher in Rekonvasi Bhumi, a organisation who collaborated with governments, NGOs, universities, and communities in agroforestry, payment for ecosystem services (PES), and environmental issue.
