Environmental Remote Sensing

In this course, Dr. Sander Veraverbeke will introduce you to the topic of Remote Sensing. In this course, he will cover the fundamentals of what remote sensing is and how it is related to energy; giving a lot of examples. Moreover, the electromagnetic spectrum will be discussed, including various critical terms and concepts related to emitting and reflecting energy and how this relates to various types of land cover. Lastly, the intertwined concepts of resolution and orbits are explored, which drive how we can use RS images.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After completion of this course, participants will:

• be familiar with key concepts related to Remote Sensing
• understand the basics of the electromagnetic spectrum and associated terms and units
• understand how different land cover has different spectral signatures
• have knowledge about various types of resolution associated with RS imagery and their trade-offs
• understand how different types of satellites affect various types of resolutions

ABOUT INSTRUCTOR

Sander Veraverbeke is an associate professor in remote sensing at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He leads the Climate & Ecosystems Change research group. His work focuses on ecosystem disturbance, primarily fires, in the context of global change; using a combination of field, modelling and remote sensing methods. He is involved in various BSc and MSc courses related to remote sensing and global change.
