Ecosystem-Based Disaster Risk Reduction Approach

Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction Approach course will consist of four lessons. In the first two lessons, Dr. Dyah Rahmawati Hizbaron will introduce the concept of Ecosystem Approach, which consists of background, role, and importance, as well as how to differentiate between various types of ecosystems. These would lead the participants to identify and assess hazards, vulnerability and risk within ecosystems, identify the role of ecosystems in mitigating hazards, and in the last part Dr. Hizbaron would highlight the data requirements for ecosystem-based hazard assessment. Furthermore, two case studies based on Indonesia will be introduced by Dr. Lintang Nur Fadlillah (Semarang) and Utia Suarma (North Jakarta) to enhance the experience and broaden the knowledge of the participants.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Understand the background, role, and importance of the Ecosystem Approach
• Differentiate between various types of ecosystems
• Identify and assess hazards, vulnerability, and risk within ecosystems
• Structure the role of ecosystems in mitigating hazards
• Understand the data requirements for ecosystem-based hazard assessment

ABOUT INSTRUCTOR

Dr. Dyah Rahmawati Hizbaron is a lecturer at the Faculty of Geography, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), and a Research Fellow at the Research Centre for Disaster, UGM. She earned her Undergraduate Degree from the Faculty of Geography, UGM, majoring in Regional Development, and her Master’s Degree at the Institute Technology Bandung and Rijks Universiteit of Groningen, The Netherlands, majoring in Infrastructure and Environmental Planning. She also earned her Doctoral Degree from the Universitas Gadjah Mada sandwich program with the University of Innsbruck, Austria, majoring in Environmental Science.

Utia Suarma serves as a member of the teaching staff in the Department of Environmental Geography within the Faculty of Geography at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). Her expertise lies in research and service domains concerning climate change adaptation, hydroclimatology, and hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, tornadoes, and severe weather events. Additionally, Utia has actively participated in research and curriculum development endeavors and has authored numerous studies focusing on hydrological disasters, urban water resources, forecasting, and warning systems.

Dr. Lintang Nur Fadlillah is a lecturer with a specialization in hydrology under the Geography faculty at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). Her expertise lies particularly in surface hydrology, water quality modeling, sediment modeling, sediment quality, lake hydrology, deltas, and estuaries.

COURSE ACCESS

This course is an integral part of the ‘WE are Water Education (Indonesia)‘ program. Currently, access to the course is limited to staff members of East Java Province who are participating in the program. Following the program period, the courses will be made available to the public. The specific date for public access will be announced on Asia Water Academy.
