Collaborative Planning for Climate Action and Water Management in A River Basin

Practical methodologies for engaging stakeholders in a bottom-up approach to climate action and water management in a river basin.

Asia Water Academy Asia Water Academy · February 27, 2024

This course focuses on collaboration and its role in planning for integrated water management. It outlines how to design and implement collaborative approaches for a program of climate action and water management in a river basin.

The course has four lessons, including a case study of collaborative planning in the Brisbane River Basin in South East Queensland, Australia. The Brisbane River Basin faces the same issues as the Welang River Basin, in Indonesia, including flooding, land-use changes, deforestation, soil erosion, clogging by sediment and waste, a decrease in water availability, and river pollution.

A short self-assessed multiple-choice quiz at the end of each of the first two lessons will reinforce participants’ learning.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants will gain skills in the following areas:

  • Collaborative planning to implement a program for climate action and water management. Including mapping the stakeholders in the river basin (users, regulators, operators, etc.)
  • Methodologies and frameworks for involving stakeholders actively in a bottom-up approach to a river basin program, taking into account power relationships and the political context of water management.
  • Tools that can address some of the challenges of stakeholder engagement, including the role and influence of bureaucracies.

ABOUT INSTRUCTOR

Andrew Davidson

Andrew has over 30 years of practical experience in collaborative planning and implementing programs for climate action and water management in river basins. He has worked in the community non-government sector and for government planning agencies.

He has also led regional collaboration programs involving Australian, State and Local Governments, industry, community and Traditional Owners supported by universities and science providers to incorporate the latest projections of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) into river basin management programs. This involved extensive community consultation through electronic media, workshops and public events.

Andrew has shared this knowledge at the International Water Centre at Griffith University in Australia as coordinator for the Collaborative Planning course in the Master of Integrated Water Management Program.
