Physical Hydrology

In this course, Dr. Wouter Berghuijs will introduce you to the topic of physical hydrology. First, he will explain hydrology itself and the hydrological cycle with all its components. Next, he will explore how river flow is being generated, which is one of the foundational processes in hydrology as it is the result of many hydrological processes. Lastly, he will demonstrate how river flow can be measured and how this relates to critical gauging equipments and calculations.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Understand which components make up the hydrological cycle and how they interact
• Understand how river flow is generated and which processes are involved
• Adequately select the appropriate technique for measuring discharge for a specific river

ABOUT INSTRUCTOR

Dr. Wouter Berghuijs is an assistant professor in the field of catchment hydrology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research goes into the age of water and processes determining streamflow and how this may be affected by anthropogenic change.
