Fundamentals of GIS

This course provides a solid foundation that allows the students to understand the basic principles of GIS. We will discuss definition of GIS, the basic concepts of GIS, the key components of GIS and its basic functions and applications.

In this course, the students will also explore the two major types of geometric data models employed in GIS: vector and raster models. What is more, the students can study GIS topology which is essentially a set of rules and behaviors that model how objects share geometry. Moreover, the students will also learn about how to analyses appropriate sources for GIS data, data capture and editing, rasterization and vectorization. As digitized and edited GIS data are stored in a spatial database, the students need to know the use of use of a Database Management System (DBMS). The most important function of GIS is the analysis of spatial data and their attributes for purposes of decision support. Indeed, spatial analysis is the very crux of GIS. It allows the conversion of data into useful information and knowledge. Lastly, we will look at how to do spatial data analysis for different purposes and applications.

This course is prepared by U Tin Ko Oo at the invitation of Thant Myanmar. U Tin Ko Oo is a PhD candidate at Mahidol University, Thailand, specializing in Environment and Resource Studies.

ဤ Course သည် GIS နည်းပညာ၏ အခြေခံသဘောတရားများကို ကျောင်းသူကျောင်းသားများ နားလည်နိုင်စေရန် အခြေခံအုတ်မြစ်ချပေးသော Course တစ်ခုဖြစ်ပါသည်။ GIS ၏ အဓိပ္ပါယ်ဖွင့်ဆိုချက်၊ GIS ၏ အခြေခံအယူအဆများ၊ GIS တွင် အဓိက ပါဝင်သောအစိတ်အပိုင်းများ၊ ၎င်း၏ အခြေခံလုပ်ဆောင်ချက်များနှင့် အသုံးချမှုနယ်ပယ်များနှင့်ပတ်သက်ပြီး ဆွေးနွေးသွားရန်ရှိပါသည်။

ကျောင်းသူကျောင်းသားများ အနေဖြင့် ဂျီသြမေတြီဒေတာမော်ဒယ်နှစ်ခုဖြစ်သော vector and raster models တို့အကြောင်းကို ဤ Course တွင် လေ့လာရပါလိမ့်မမည်။ ထို့ပြင် အရာဝတ္ထုများ့၏ ဂျီသြမေတြီများကို မျှဝေထားခြင်းကို လေ့လာသော GIS Topology ကိုလည်း လေ့လာခွင့် ရရှိနိုင်ပါမည်။ ကျောင်းသူကျောင်းသားများသည် သင့်တော်သော GIS Data Source များကို စိစစ်ရွေးချယ်ခြင်း၊ ဒေတာဖမ်းယူခြင်းနှင့်တည်းဖြတ်ခြင်း နှင့် raster to vector သို့မဟုတ် vector to raster အပြန်အလှန်ပြောင်းလဲခြင်းများကိုလည်း လေ့လာရပါလိမ့်မည်။ ဒစ်ဂျစ်တယ်ဒေတာ အဖြစ်ပြောင်းလဲတည်းဖြတ်ထားသော ဒေတာများကို Spatial Database တစ်ခုမှာ သိမ်းဆည်းထားရတတ်သဖြင့် ကျောင်းသူကျောင်းသားများသည် DBMS ဟုခေါ်သော ဒေတာစီမံခန့်ခွဲမှုစနစ်အကြောင်းကိုလည်း သိရှိထားရန်လိုပါသည်။ GIS ၏ အဓိက အကျဆုံးလုပ်ဆောင်ချက်သည် နေရာဆိုင်ရာ အချက်အလက်များနှင့် ၎င်းတို့နှင့်ပတ်သက်သော အသေးစိတ်ဖော်ပြချက်များကို ခွဲခြမ်းစိတ်ဖြာခြင်းဖြစ်သည်။ ထိုခွဲခြမ်းစိတ်ဖြာခြင်းသည် GIS ၏ အရေးအပါဆုံးအပိုင်းဖြစ်သည်ဟု ဆိုနိုင်ပါသည်။ ထိုခွဲခြမ်းစိတ်ဖြာခြင်းမှ အသုံးဝင်သော သတင်းအချက်အလက်များ၊ သုတများ ရရှိလာသည်။ နောက်ဆုံးအနေဖြင့် ကျောင်းသူကျောင်းသားများသည် ရည်ရွယ်ချက်နှင့်အသုံးချမှုအမျိုးမျိုးအတွက် နေရာဆိုင်ရာ အချက်အလက်မျာများကို ခွဲခြမ်းစိတ်ဖြာခြင်းပြုလုပ်ပုံကို လေ့လာရန်ဖြစ်သည်။

ဤ course ကို သန့်မြန်မာ၏ ဖိတ်ခေါ်မှုဖြင့် ဦးတင်ကိုဦးမှ ပို့ချထားပါသည်။ ဦးတင်ကိုဦးသည် ထိုင်းနိုင်ငံ၊ Mahidol University တွင် Environment and Resource Studies ဘာသာရပ်အတွက် Ph.D ပြုလုပ်နေသူ ပညာရှင်တစ်ဦး ဖြစ်ပါသည်။

Thant Myanmar is an organization born out of a movement to fight plastic pollution. It was registered in February 2019 as a non-profit company continuing its campaigns and public awareness raising and also doing contractual work on the topics of waste management, surveys and research, development of toolkits and guides for the private sector. Now Thant Myanmar’s clients range from the World Bank to UN programs, NGOs working in conservation and tourism as well as private sector industries developing waste reduction efforts in their specific industry.

Thant Myanmar is mainly operating in the following fields:

• Public awareness raising on the environmental impact of plastic and promotion of sustainable alternative
• Community engagement through its large volunteer network of CSOs who use our material and tools to change behavior on the ground. More than 50 trainings have been delivered with practical demonstrations and community management support to CSOs in both urban and rural Myanmar.
• Consulting organizations, companies and the hospitality sector in shifting to alternative solutions
• Consulting towns CDDs and rural communities in improved waste management
• Advocacy to government through research (currently discontinued due change in government)
• Environmental education to school and university students on topics of plastic pollution reduction, community solid waste management in both rural and urban Myanmar and climate change
• Trainings to youth organizations on practical approaches to implement solid waste management through their network. More than 20 such trainings have been delivered to youth till date.
