Critical Hydropolitics in the Mekong Region

In this course, water governance is framed as a hydro-social process and we will delve into the politics of decision making, scale, and power dynamics through examples from Myanmar and the region. Critical hydropolitics in the Mekong Region will explore contested infrastructure development in transboundary river systems and the changes both historically and currently that infrastructure construction has on human-nature relationships.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After completion of this course, participants will be able to critically reflect on how contested hydraulic infrastructure is embued with power as both a material and immaterial object that restructures human-nature relationships over long periods of time.

ABOUT INSTRUCTOR

Stewart Motta is a researcher and PhD candidate at the VU Amsterdam and a fellow with the NEWAVE programme working on transboundary hydropolitics in the Mekong Region.
