Asia Water Academy will be hosting the 2nd edition of WE are Water Education program in Indonesia, specifically the second-most populous province in the country, East Java Province. The region grapples with both environmental hazards and the pressing challenge of climate change. Among the rivers causing concern, the Welang River basin stands out due to recurring flooding, extensive deforestation, and water pollution. In response, the province is actively preparing to confront these issues by implementing inventive strategies and forging strategic alliances.
In aid of this endeavor, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and The Water Agency developed WE are Water Education (Indonesia) initiative together with the East Java Province governments. The project is part of the Orange Knowledge Programme facilitated by Nuffic and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This capacity-building program aims to equip the East Java Province’s civil servants with practical skills and international best practices, enabling Dutch and Indonesian knowledge transfer and creating integrated and cross-sectoral collaboration in climate-resilient Water Management for the Welang River Basin.
This program is structured with 4 clusters: Cluster 1: Water Resource Management, Cluster 2: Disaster Risk Reduction, Cluster 3: Economics of Ecosystem and Biodiversity and Cluster 4: Enabling Climate Resilience. And the courses will be developed by the international and local water experts from Indonesia.
The training will start with EJP staff engaging in self-learning through the courses offered on the Asia Water Academy platform. This will be complemented by virtual meetings and discussions to assess and improve their learning experience. Following this phase, in-person workshops will be arranged to prompt a thorough reflection on their progress, foster peer discussions, and enable the application of their recently acquired knowledge to a practical, real-life case study.
Furthermore, courses within the program will be made accessible to the public, allowing professionals from government, public, or private sectors to learn and adapt these insights to their specific regions.
