Introduction to Spatial Analysis

In this course, Dr. Jasper van Vliet will introduce you to the topic of spatial analysis and spatial data. In this course, the fundamentals of creating digital maps to effectively get your message are covered. After that spatial data and analyses are explored, and the core properties of spatial data are discussed. Together, these lessons form the basis to be able to effectively explore spatial data and perform spatial analyses through programs like QGIS (https://qgis.org/en/site/)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Produce effective and good-looking figures for publications/presentations;
• Be familiar with two core spatial data types (raster and vector)
• Understand the basics of spatial analysis to answer a research question
• Have knowledge and understanding of some core spatial data properties (projections, datums, coordinate systems, aspects of data quality)

ABOUT INSTRUCTOR

Jasper van Vliet is an associate professor in land use and urban development at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His work focuses on food systems and the role of human settlements in land-use change and he is involved in various BSc and MSc courses related to GIS and spatial analyses.
